Anniversary of a Fresh Start

Well, it’s been a year since I moved to Portland. It kind of seems like just yesterday in a way.

So, it’s not really as cold and wet here as everybody made it out to be. Yeah, it gets cold, and yeah, it rains, but it’s doesn’t pour 10 and half months out of the year like everybody made it sound.

I don’t have all that many friends. I feel like I should know more people for as long as I have been here, but I don’t. I would feel sad about it, but the more I think about it, I didn’t have as many friends in L.A. as I should have for as long as I was there. So, whatever. Story of my life I guess haha.

I’m going to be starting a new job in a couple weeks. I am pretty excited. My current one was good for a while, and helped me get my feet on the ground, but now it’s time to move on to different things.

I thought I had everything all situated now, but sometimes things don’t always go as planned. Sometimes things get turned upside down unexpectedly. There’s an area of my life right now that’s sort of up in the air… I think I know what the outcome of it will be but I’m going to let the dust settle a little bit, because sometimes things don’t go as planned.

I feel kind of terrible right now, this is not how I wanted today to be. But I feel confidant that things will look up soon. It’s all a learning experience, and an adventure… or something.

2 More Observations

1. Calling people is hard. Like… back in LA if I was calling someone in the same area code as me, I just dialed the 7 numbers. Here, I sometimes have to dial 503 first? WEIRD! It took me 3 tries to make my first phone call out from work haha.

2. If it’s really cold in the morning, the condensation on your window turns to ice. Freaky huh?

A real update will come soon.

So. Portland.

Some initial thoughts on Portland:

  • It like, never stops raining.
  • The speed limits are higher here.
  • The drive to Downtown Portland from my house is a little long. Oh well.
  • My house is really easy to drive past. I do it like, every time.
  • Work is so close it’s not even funny.
  • I am not nearly as cold as I expected to be.
  • We have all the essentials really near by.
  • There’s no sales tax! Totally awesome.
  • Somebody else pumps my gas. It’s a trip.
  • I think I like it here.

The drive up was fairly uneventful. Just really god damn LONG. I never want to drive again. My tarp came loose while I was on the road so I had to pull over on the freeway and fix it. I was all MacGyver status with my swiss army knife and twine, climbing on that truck tying things down. I must have been quite the sight to see

I stopped in Rancho Cordova at my friends house for the night, then trudged along for like, 9 hours the rest of the way. I got snowed on! I didn’t need chains, which I was a little bit bummed about because I dropped $50 getting some just in case, but whatever. I suppose it was nice being able to drive a decent speed without them haha.

I got here Thursday and my new housemate Erick helped me bring all my junk in, and also his mom and siblings who were just leaving when I got here. Then Erick had to leave which was kind of funny. “Hi, here’s a key, sorry I won’t be here tonight, don’t make a mess!” hahaha.

So Friday I spent the whole day unpacking and I bought a mattress and a desk. Oh, and work clothes. I am officially broke until next month. Icky. Then Erick and I drank a whole lot of beer and watched Beerfest (totally appropriate, no?) and that was that.

Yesterday I did some more organizing then got tired of it. I need a break for a few days. Everything is shoved in my closet right now haha. Theeeen Erick and I drove to Downtown Portland to pick up Taco Bell and his friend Jim, and the three of us went to the Blazer’s game. They totally lost but it was fun anyway. I almost died on the stairs and now have a nasty bruise on my foot. Wearing shoes is a painful experience.

After the game, we met up with some more of their friends and went barhopping. Everybody was really nice, I had a good time. Of course, this morning I was hungover beyond belief. I trudged to Albertson’s and bought like, 2 gallons of Powerade. It was on sale for dirt cheap. So I drank a bunch of that and had some cereal and Excedrin and I feel much better.

I start work tomorrow. Wish me luck!

I’m in Portland!!!!!

After a whole awful lot of driving, I have finally arrived in Portland!!!! YAY!

I have no furniture and I am really insanely tired. Pictures and stories coming when, well, my brain functions. I just wanted you guys to know I made it and am alive! There’s a couple of pictures from my journey on KSF To-Go to tide you over. Now I am off to somewhat organize my stuff and then watch a movie and sleep.

Oh yeah, and new housemate is totally awesome.

That is all.
